Out of the more than a thousand 'shakhas' (recensions) of the four Vedas in our country, unfortunately only 11 shakhas survive today in the oral tradition and preservation of the karma-kanda is critical to protection of the Vedas. Presently two of these shakhas viz. shakala-shakha of the Rig Veda and kanva shakha of the shukla-yajur-veda, are being preserved here. With the Lord’s grace, the dream is to have all the 11 existing shakhas of the Vedas taught at the Gurukulam.

The course

Young initiates starting from the age of 5 reside in the Gurukulam and study a chosen Veda shakha for twelve years. They are trained in chanting, performance of rituals and transmission of the knowledge to the next generation. Their life style is one of meaningfully rigorous discipline and commitment. Teaching of the shakala-shakha has been going on since 2001 and instruction in the kanva-shakha is underway since August 2004.
